Daughtry Gets the Door (?)

Color me stunned. Despite a full workday of industry gossip and insider guessing, I was certain Chris Daughtry would make it to the Final Three of American Idol. But unless my TV's on the fritz, a nation of fickle viewers just cast off him into exile. Well, not exile. Everyone who's heard Chris' chainsaw-soaked-in-whiskey voice agrees he will soon make powerful recordings. In fact, not being coronated America's latest pop sensation may very well help him in the rocker credibility department. But I was hoping the unassuming service rep who melted my microphone with his soaring pipes last summer would win the whole damn cheesy thing. I guess now he'll just have to settle for being a globally-known rock star. Not a bad fall-back plan certainly, but I'd be lying if I said the unexpected joy of this year's AI season didn't just come to a screeching, unceremonious halt.

No doubt I'll soon see Chris in person and become the gazillionth person to tell him how badly he was robbed. That sucks! Since he first sang for Shannon Smith and my lens in downtown Greensboro, I've greatly enjoyed covering his meteoric rise from caterwauling everyman to thunder-tongued Rock God in training. The same goes for his wife Deanna, a lovely lady whose infectious nature makes you want to invite her to your next backyard bar-be-cue. Let's review, shall we? Chris will NOT be the next American Idol. He will NOT be returning to Greensboro in two days for a whirlwind hometown tour. He will NOT be forced to take part in yet another dorky Ford commercial. He WILL go on to make more money and receive more acclaim than a thousand TV cameramen. And his almost ordained ascent will forever remind your humble lenslinger that storybook endings rarely happen as scheduled.

Oh yeah...Go Elliot!

Chris is amazing. The fact that he is a family man, and appears to be so caring is wonderful. I strongly belive he is destin for great things in his life. I wish him well. I am still in shock that he is no longer on the show. I tuned in every week just to see him. What am I going to do now? My favorite performance by Chris was the Bon Jovi song that he did. I will never forget it!!!!!

We just can't believe it. But I think he will probably be better off with a real contract. Something worked out better for Kelly C. to get away from Idol people. She soared. So go Chris, I'm ready to buy!

I'm sure this is just the beginning of a long journey for Chris. He has real talent.

Chris, keep going after your dream!

Chris is gone. Shocking. This is injustice. America is so blind. Well, I will guit watching AI, and I am waiting to buy. The way he sang "Walk a Line", "Suspicious Mind" haunts me every night in my sleep.

totally shocked. chris is one of the most phenomenally talented singers i've ever heard in my whole life. i will not watch the show anymore, but i will be buying his record. anyway, he is a true artist, not a cheesy pop idol. he has a GIGANTIC future ahead of him.

I myself am shocked...I will no longer tune into American Idol. Instead I will wait patiently for Chris to release an album. Keep rocking Chris. Everyone loves you.

When did AI jump the shark? When Chris got voted off.

However, it's all good. Just a shame we'll have to wait on Chris playing locally again.

What a shock, I almost cried. He is definitely the most talented, and a good person to boot. I wish him all the luck in the world and although I'm a country fan, I will be purchasing his first CD. GO CHRIS- you don't really need American Idol!!

I am in total shock! I have never been so stunned in all my life, as when Ryan said that Chris was going home. What is wrong with the American voters? Chris has got the best voice to come along since Kelly Clarkson. We won't be hearing the last of him, that is for sure. Hang in there, Chris, you will be recording before you know it. I will be one of the first in line to support you. I love your voice.

Hey Chris, i read on another site that you read this site often. I wanted to let you know that when you make a CD, i am going to buy two of them, one for each foot!! You rock. I was so moved to see how gutted you were when ryan dashed the results on you, like a bucket of unexpected cold water. I was so hurt to see you sing the exit song with such an empty spirit. You sang it great, as always, and because you perform so well, I felt all of the emotions that you must have been feeling.

If you are at peace with this, then so am I. Go make your album, and I will buy it, along with millions of others. However, if you are mad(like I am) then you must know that I tried to vote many, many times until well after 9 tuesday night, and rec'd a busy signal. I called theother contestants numbers and they all worked fine. So irony of all ironies, i voted for each of the other three singers once, and was not able to get a vote in for you!!

You are probably better off without Idol, but you seem like a task oriented kind of guy. You were in it to win it, not to get discovered. You were already singing when you went to the show.

well, best wishes, and stay true to your wife and kids. Your loyalty is a really honorable characteristic.

Chris,

My whole family was devastated to see you have to leave the show. (As well as everyone else I've talked with today.) You were the only one we were interested in seeing perform each week. We're done with the show but will be watching for your CD and hopefully this will all turn out to be a blessing in disguise.

Good Luck!

Chris, like many others, I was unable to get through on the phone for the two hours - and tried both numbers. Unlike others, I didn't try the other contestants' numbers because I didn't want to take a chance.

I'm reading lots of notes from people in the Midwest who had trouble getting through to your phone numbers - perhaps there was a problem. As I see it, that's the only explanation for what happened. There's no way you should have been at the bottom, after someone who forgot lyrics, etc. - not at this stage in the show.

Me and my friends, family and co-workers are no longer watching AI due to your end on the show.

I'll watch the tryouts but never again an entire season. Don't like how things are handled.

Can't wait for your own music to come out. You'll have lots of sales. The best to you and your family...

You were so robbed, you are the TRUE AMERCIAN IDOL, I am so shocked, and saddened. I don't listen to rock music, never have, but I absoulutely loved listening to you sing, you gave me goose bumps. GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!!!!

Anonymous said...

I was stunned last night - I still can't believe it! It was so hard to get votes in on Tuesday night because both of the numbers for Chris were continually busy - I don't understand.

Chris, you move us. I can't wait for your CD's - I know there will be several. Please don't be discouraged. Your fan base is HUGE!

AI needs to change it's voting system, as this is obviously not working. The entire nation is in mourning over Chris getting voted off. It was clear on ALL the judges faces that the TRUE American Idol just got the axe. You will get MORE attention this way, Chris. We are behind you 100%, we KNOW you will get a recording contract, you have MORE talent in your little finger than the 3 left, combined! Hurry up and record, so we can BUY!! Don't worry, all things happen for a reason. WE LOVE YOU!!

Chris is absolutely amazing in more ways than one! I was absolutely speechless last night and I, for one, will not be watching the rest of the AI season!!

Chris, all things happen for a reason, this is going to work out to your advantage. I also will not be watching AI anymore. You were the only reason to watch. Man your voice is great, hurry and put a cd out I can't wait to buy it. Rock On!

I will be the first in line to buy his multi-million copy selling album when it comes out. And AI will be sitting there saying "that's the one that got away". American, you blew it on this one! Chris, you are AMAZING!

You are the greatest and an incredible vocalist. Keep rockin' and I will see you on tour.
P.S Please come to New Orleans to perform when you do go on tour!!!!! Lorri

I never watched AI until this year, and we only gave it a try this season because of Kellie Pickler. (We saw her on Charlotte's "Gimme the Mike"" and wanted to see how far she might go on AI.) However, as much as we were hoping good things would happen for Kellie, both my husband & I were stunned the first time we heard you sing. We KNEW you were - hands down - the best singer on the show! We marveled at your performances every week, and like so many others were shocked by last night's turn of events. I won't be watching any more episodes or seasons of AI, but I will sure be watching your career for many years to come. Went to your band's website and ordered the EP. (The first of many purchases I hope to make, so please do a CD soon!)

From Canada...Chris you are fantastic! Too bad we couldn't vote for you in Canada because you have so many fans from the True North! When we heard the news you had been voted off, I had tears in my eyes and my husband said he is never watching American Idol again! LOL You really made us sit up and take notice - ever since your first audition when we met you and your wife...and we know you have an AWESOME career ahead of you! We'll be here eagerly anticipating your next CD!

Dear Chris: Our entire family loves to watch you sing. You have converted us to Rock fans. Please keep this all in perspective. We expected you to be among the final two contestants and to probably win. For some reason, God has other plans. However, remember how far you have come in your dream to sing for your life's work. And your wife and children are healthy and love you dearly. You are on your way now, just stay faithful and each and every day remember the tripod of life: Faith, Family and Friends. It will be our honor to listen to your songs on the radio and buy your cd's. Godspeed Mr. Daughtry Sincerely, The Sterchi Family

I have been watching AI since the second season, missed the first season, and no one has impressed me more than Chris Daughtry. For one thing the love he has for his wife and children is awesome...Chris you are the best there has been on AI...to be honest with you I do not care to watch the rest of show with out you. Remember you are an American Idol and your going to be a big star.

Good Luck...

Chris,
You were robbed, i will no longer watch American Idol this year or any other, i think they may have just ended that show but it will have to be a joint effort by the people. Rock on The Hill's think you are very talented and awesome, you have what it takes and i don;'t think you need american idol on your resume even though they did help us find you, but that's all the crdit they are getting because they just TRIED to help destroy you too! but i didn't work!!!!!! I can't wait to buy your cd, We Love you Chris!
P.S. we know how it's feels my husband is a stong singer like yourself, this happens a lot.
Take care and never let go!

Hey Chris,

Good luck and hope to hear Keep Me Close and Conviction in the future - great songs. You've even converted my country co-workers, not such an easy feat in the sticks of North Dakota!

Chris,
Hope you read this site regularly – as you can see you have a tremendous fan base – and a very diverse one at that! That is one thing AI gave you. Millions of people and many VIP’s in the music industry have seen your talent, maturity and integrity from the start. I image it is overwhelming and quite flattering to have a band like Fuel ask you to join them. But I think there is a great deal of Chris Daughtry’s talent we have yet to see. You’ve shown on AI that you are your own person; a very talented person who can stand on his own. Hope you are able to use the time on the AI tour to pick the brains of every industry professional you come in contact with to give you more “fuel” on which to base your own decisions. Other AI finalists and winners in past seasons have talent, but much of their recordings seem to be a product of their handlers. I know Chris Daughtry can, and will give his millions of fans pure Chris Daughtry – whatever he decides that to be throughout his career.
Looking forward to the first Chris Daughtry CD.

I, too, was completely shocked and instantly called my musician boyfriend who was, once again, at the rehearsal studio... a fellow rocker..
He couldn't believe it either, but said, " he's better off, now he can do what he wants.. he doesn't need them." He made me feel better. You don't need "them". All you need are the millions of us out there who know talent when we see/hear it. You are already an American star and will be successful your own way, without the "American Idol" guidelines. Which, being familiar with the whole process, I am sure are a big pain in the ass.
Consider several of your cd's being purchase in Albany, NY. We're waiting!!!

Greetings. This was the first year I watched AI and the moment I saw Chris I knew he was a star!! I am sorry he was booted, but he doesn't need to win at AI.. he already won!! I would have loved to see him be the next idol, and I don't think I will enjoy the remaining weeks without him, but we all know this was not a real count. There is no way he was at the bottom. Chris, take the lead singer with that band and show them who the real idol is!!
Good going!!

Anonymous said...

Chris doesn't need the AI title to be successful. American knows who he is now and we are all waiting for his CD. The AI title leaves artists with a stigma, and now Chris will not have to live up to that.
He just has to live up to who he is---the very talented rock singer that we now know and love and are all waiting on pins and needles to hear more of him. America won't let him sit "Idol"--we all want Chris's CD NOW!!! Best of luck to you Chris---you are going to be an amazing success.

You are the American Idol, Chris. I can't wait to hear your music on the radio.

Blessings to you and your family.

Chris,

My family and I are still in shock over last week's results. My five year old son cried himself to sleep that night. You are his hero. He wants to be a rock star when he grows up. We can't wait to buy your cd. Your voice is unreal. I hear it constantly in my head. I am addicted and can't get enough of Chris Daughtry. Keep Rockin.

I'm hoping that "Walk the Line" is in stores ASAP for me to buy. That performance was amazing. I'll buy whatever he puts out!!!!

Anonymous said...

Chris, I'll watched AI since the start...you are the best artist they have ever had on the show. I respect you so much not only for your talent but your devotion to your wife and kids. That makes you so sexy!!!! I'll buy whatever you put out there. I can't watch the show anymore because you were the only reason why I watched. Good Luck with everything....you will be so successful!!!

Anonymous said...

Chris should know that he has folks praying for him and his family that they will make the right choices for their future.

Chris....was the ONLY reason to watch an otherwise dumb show. I hated Idol before and I only respect it now because without it we'd have had to wait longer before he was known to the rest of us....(exciled in NY as I am hadn't heard of Chris before Idol)....

Make the right choice, make albums (I'll buy em) and go on tour (I'll buy tickets)....I won't be alone by a long shot.

My personal gripe about Idol isn't about the voting, etc....It is the fact that 5 people know about the results, one of whom is Simon Cowell......

Duh and they let Taylor sing his Jailhouse Skunk and cut Chris off in the middle of his last live Idol performance.....

Got to suck going on tour with the eventual "winner" of the show knowing full well you kicked their butt straight up....

Know this....YOU are already Bigger than that! America loves you and we are ready for the Rock explosion to come.....

Rock on Chris we love you!

Anonymous said...

America didn't vote Chris off. America neglected to vote for Chris because we all thought he was a shoe-in. Shame on us. Chris won me over with his I Walk The Line performance and if he recorded that song I'd stand in line to buy the CD. I think Chris will join Kelly Clarkson as the other Idol with real talent and a great career. Hope he remains a great guy as he soars.

I'm a little late on this, but I'm still stunned a week later. I have AI on, but can't bring myself to watch. I looked forward to hearing Chris sing every week (well sometimes twice!). Its just not the same.

He had a way of singing that made you feel like he was singing just to you. I just don't get how he got voted off, but I do think that it was the best thing to happen to him. Now, he's not locked into a box, he can explore what is going to work best for him.

Chris, have a ball touring this summer with AI and best of luck with your furture endeavors. I am a fan in whatever you decide. I love you man! Rock On!

i'm still furious that i don't get to hear you for the next few weeks... you totally rocked our world... will buy your album when you decide what to do... it would be a travesty if we missed out on more of you...

you are going to be amazing... can't wait to hear it...

Just another two cents from a middle aged-rocker... You are destined for great things! All the wailing & fussing from your many fans will probably keep you in their line of sight for a long time! Getting the boot from AI was probably the best thing to happen to you! Congratulations on your new career path, and I wait with baited breath for your hot CD!!!

Anonymous said...

Chris... all the way from Guatemala Central America... You are one of the gratest singers I've ever heard. Don't worry about being voted off AI... Your voice, carisma, and honesty will get you farther than the fact of being the next AI.
Stay true to yourself and your wife and child (that's the secret to success)...
I can't wait to buy your CD!!! Please hurry!!!

Anonymous said...

I hope Chris reads this. My husband and I never watched AI before you. I just happened to hear you audition as I was flipping through the channels. After that show, we watched AI only for you. We love your voice, your spirit, your character, and your obvious love for your family. My heart broke for you and your wife on your last night of AI. But I have to believe it's for the best. Now you won't be stuck doing a AI tour and will be free to do your own thing. Please let your fans know when you're making a career move. I'm sure we'll all be there buying tickets and Cd's. Good luck and God Bless.

I am so picky when i comes to music and singers and well Chris all I can say now is you haunt my dreams know Incredable can't wait to buy your CD nothing I can say exspress the way you make me feel watching you sing.

Greetings from Indonesia. I am still shocked that Chris is not in the final. If I knew it's going to be like that, I would've voted for him (from here). Anyway, I am still shocked. We can talk about this forever ...

Let's move on. I can't wait for Chris' CD!

You know, I think it is better this way. You can focus on the real thing that is making music (and money of course), than being burdened by american idol.

So, when your music is out Chris?

Anonymous said...

Chris-

Well AI is over and we all know who should have won it...but like many others have said, you got your name out there, you got people to listen to your amazing voice and that is something that we all have to thank AI for (that is the only thing though)! You are extremely talented and beautiful, and it is so great to see you so dedicated to your family also. I know you will come out way more successful than the "winner" of AI...please come to Montgomery, Alabama when you tour (not all of Alabama likes "You know who")! Keep rockin' Chris!
